Redgate, like many companies before us, has switched to Salesforce for our CRM system and experienced huge improvements as a result. In amongst all the benefits, however, there was one thing that stood out as problematic: the deployment process could be time-consuming and frustrating. Redgate has a wealth of experience in creating successful deployment tools for SQL Server, and this started us thinking about whether we could help to improve the Salesforce deployment experience and develop a tool for the community to use. So we set out to speak with as many people as we could, to understand what they liked about Salesforce and whether they found particular areas problematic. The response was extremely positive, but after a while we started to notice a pattern that echoed our own experiences: almost everybody mentioned deployment and, when they did, it was with some trepidation. Wanting to dig deeper into the issue of deployments, we spoke to people about what sort of applications they were building, how many people were on their teams, how many organizations they had, how often they deployed changes, who was responsible for deployments, how long they took, and how often they went wrong.
Continuous Integration or Continuous Delivery is the idea of automating deployments so that that you can continuously integrate and deliver small changes rather than doing massive releases. CI means setting up an automated process that allows developers or admins to push their changes in real time. The technical goal of CI is to establish a consistent and automated way to build, package, and test applications. Most teams work with multiple environments other than the production, such as development and testing environments, and CD ensures there is an automated way to push code changes to them. Typically, this involves using a source control solution Git, SVN, etc. Jenkins, Travis, etc. Test automation is also a key component of CI. Changesets is one of the tools provided by Salesforce for migrating metadata changes between connected orgs. It provides a process to synchronize the metadata between a source org and a target org.
Gearset helps Salesforce admins at Cisco Meraki to track changes and deploy them to their orgs. Real estate portal Zillow adopted Gearset to speed up deployment times and streamline its releases. McKesson uses Gearset to push automated changes to production multiple times a week. Sutter Health's deployments are 8x faster with Gearset than with change sets. Developers at the FinTech startup Billie use Gearset for rapid, source-driven release management.
